Catholics today celebrate the first moments of the Incarnation, 9 months before Christmas. Father talks about the honor of women in his homily today. The Catholic church is comprised of the first feminists in this way. Not only did Christ the New Adam come to save us, but Mary the New Eve says "yes" to the Will of God. Even she still had questions about His Will. How is this to happen? Though it was effectively Eve who first sinned and Adam who followed. It was first by the decision of a woman, thus the new Eve, through which God comes to carry out the path of Salvation. CCC 488 states, "The Father of mercies willed that the Incarnation should be preceded by assent on the part of the predestined mother, so that just as a woman had a share in the coming of death, so also should a woman contribute to the coming of life"
We as Catholics reverence her as: New Eve (overcoming sin with obedience and Christ, the New Adam, who followed), Ark of the Covenant (bearing the Word of God), Mother of God (Jesus is God), Mother of the Church (Body of Christ), and Queen of Heaven (as in Revelation; and as Intercessor, as was the title of the Mother of the King in Old Testament Kingdoms).
This is much different than the cry of pro-abortionists, who claim we "oppress" women. On the contrary, we love and respect women as the Daughters of God and Sisters in Christ they truly are. One of my classmates is writing a research paper along these lines, here thesis is: "Mary, as Mother of God, provides Catholic women with a concrete example of how to be both spiritual mothers and earthly mothers so as to wholly fulfill their vocation as women." I will likely be posting a link to it towards the end of the semester with her permission.
Bishop Degrood looks at this marvelous feast in light of current events:
